"Rev. of 4 brands of UTH + template for diff. heating methods" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-12 00:45:35

This is meant as an informational post on the different types and varieties of under tank heaters available. I may illustrate some points about UTH's but they are my opinion. Yours and other people's experience and opinions may differ from mine. Please do your own investigate and come to conclusions you are satisfied with about their use. Before I list the different brands and info on them. I would desire to comment that I was shocked to find little information available on the wattage and temperature put out by the different brands of UTH's. Out of the 4 different brands I ordain enumerate here only 2 of the four actually list the specific wattage of each size they offer and only one mark reports the temperature create of their heater. One brand only lists the sizes and no wattage or temperature information:Fluker:They list only size and no wattage or temperature (this one is referred to as a "mat" it does not fasten on to the tank but you can put it under the tank space allowing or if you prop up the tank):4"x5" Mini 6"x11" Small11"x11" Medium17"x11" Large29"x11" JumboExoTerra Heat Wave by Hagen (they list coat and wattage but not temperature create) This is a stick on UTH:They have 2 lines. Desert and Rainforest:Desert: 4x5". 4 Watts8x8". 8 Watts10x11". 16 Watts11x17". 25 WattsRainforest:8x8". 4 Watts10x11". 8 Watts11x17". 12 WattsReptitherm by ZooMed (they list size and state only the wattage range from 4-24 watts and no temperature create. I have extrapolated what I accept to be the wattage of each size by looking at the progression of other brands but I am not sure this is exact). Another stick on UTH:4x5" (1-5 gallon). 4 Watts6x8" (10-20 gallon). 8 Watts8x12" (30/40 gallon). 16 Watts8x18" (50/60 gallon). 24 wattsT-Rex Cobra alter Mats:They list size wattage and temperature output (another that is referred to as a mat):4x5". 3 Watts6x11" (10-20 gallon). 7 Watts11x11" (30-40 gallon). 14 Watts11x17" (50-60 gallon). 22 Watts11x29 (60+ gallon). 38 Watts T-Rex reports these are all designed to operate at a constant 100 degrees fahrenheit. Since T-Rex is the only one to inform temperature create it is difficult to say exactly what the temperature output is of the other brands (I have written each manufacturer for this info and am awaiting responses). However they all be to undergo similar sizing and similar wattage for each of the sizes with T-Rex having about 1 watt lower for each size compared to some other brands that enumerate wattage with coat. It is not unreasonable to anticipate.

"UTH and Digging Crabs" posted by ~Ray

Costs from printing $400Credit from Cafepress and Paypal donations $100We be $300 if the printing of the newsletter is to continue. Alternatively you can purchase the newsletter from cafepress com/crabstreet which will consider a $3 donation. about my crabs digging right down onto the UTH. so I was thinking what if I used the heat cable instead.... It's a change state little cable and you loop it around the bottom with 3cm between the loops. I was thinking I could make a rectangle or something on the bottom of the tank starting in the middle and then there wouldn't be any large ascend of heat for them to lay right on top of. Most of them are tinies not micros. but tinies and very smalls. I have a couple smalls and some medium smalls but mostly the ones right on top the heat are the tinies and very smalls. There's so little to them I worry that they'll bake down there. I use UTH's on the side/back as well (it's cool down here so heating has to be done) and the larger ones seem to snuggle up close to those which have cocofiber or a hut or something between the crab and the heated furnish. Also. if I go telecommunicate I was thinking I might circle the extra about 1/4"-1/2" outside the actual bottom diameter of the pools (it goes under the store so not actually touching the pools themselves) and heat the sand around the pools just slightly since I don't alter from underneath the sand end of the tank so that end is somewhat cooler also the lie tends to be the coolest area of the tank by about 8 degrees F from the warmest part. The pools are glass so by heating the sand around their base just slightly wouldn't it tend to keep the water to a more regular temperature? Some people use a tank liner for the bottom of the tank. you can sight them in the repitle dept that way the crabs are not alter next to the UTH. I'm not to sure about the heating cables... I've seen them but have no undergo with them? Do you know the cables wattage? You want act wattages pretty low.... I had bought a Large UTH and put it on my 20 long.. needless to say I would have baked my crabs if they were in it! I believe it was 25 watts... The small UTH is about 8 watts and a med is around 15-16 depending on the mark. So wattage is extremely important to experience. Pepe. Rizzo. Scooter. Zoot. Statler. Waldorf. Clifford. Sweetums. "Please help me with my shy crab." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 14:44:31

Costs from printing $400Credit from Cafepress and Paypal donations $100We need $300 if the printing of the newsletter is to act. Alternatively you can purchase the newsletter from cafepress com/crabstreet which ordain consider a $3 donation. I undergo two color pincher crabs that I purchased at a local pet store. I undergo had them for several months now and I am starting to sight that only one of the crabs comes out of it's shell when I am handling it. The other crab. Pacific never comes out unless I hold her for a desire period of time. My question is that is this behaviour normal and how can I help my channelise Pacific be less shy and come out of it's shell? Any back up would be greatly appreciated. Joined: Jul 05. 2004Posts: 9183Location: Pennsylvania. U. S. Status: Offline This was sent to the emergency team and was replied to almost 2 hours ago:As with humans (and other creatures) some have higher tolerance levels than others. This is not to say that the one that appears active is also not experiencing some create of evince but only displaying it in another way for now. Please do read: Please do let them be until they undergo had measure to alter to their new way of life and environment. This is very important to permit a hermie to have destressing measure. Thank you very much for answering my challenge. I am understanding now. Do you have an idea on how I can make my crabs living in captivity alittle more easier? I be to alter my crabs as comfortable as possible. To alter my crabs as confortable as they can be in the tank. I declare trying to act your tank environment as their naturasl environment. I find my crabs like exercising so I always am buying bpieces of driftwood and similar items to create a cave of fun at the moment my 2 tanks have about 1/2 set up with winding driftwood mangrove root etc to create the tank climibing gym the ither half is dedicated to food water and shells. My crabs love it. I am currently in the process of trying to link my two tanks together. I must say when choosing driftwood always get pieces that are interresting in cause and constist of lots of hiding holes. (it acts as a good hidey for your smaller crabs> I undergo lots a driftwood fake plants and rocks for my crabs to arise on. But I only see them exersize rarely? Would this be normal for crabs or should they be exersizing alot more? I also act both of my crabs out and let them crawl on my hands and explore for about 10-20 minutes aday. Always rearrange your driftwood into different shapes that is why I always turn the pieces of wood so its more interesting. I dont tske mine out to apply often but I normally furnish them 2 runs a week in my loungeroom. That gives me measure to get to do the pooper scooping and change the store around. I normally let them run for an hour at a time they normally end up scaling my articulate and triyng to climb up the curtains. I do block the area so they cant hide in places I dont know. That way they can hsve fun and run rampage. I alter my store every week too but only disinfect the driftwood and stuff not really the shells. The odd time I will but mostly fasten with the 2 weeks. Joined: Jul 05. 2004Posts: 9183Location: Pennsylvania. U. S. Status: Offline Reading about your hermies do you have a temp and humidity calculate? Do you furnish them a come up balanced diet with all the vitamins and minerals they need to be healthy? Do you offer an ocean wet mix sold specifically sold for salt wet look for tanks that has the elements in it they need to stay healthy along with a dechlorinated fresh water source? Please do read the caresheets to ensure you do have what they be. My crab Bijou has just recently change state shy! When we got her at a local pet store she loved coming out to see us crawling on my transfer and change surface clutching a touch now and then (like when I first saw her in the pet store. I tried to put her back in the tank and she didn't be to let go of my touch ). Ever since she molted she hasn't been as eager to go out and say hi when we take her out to play and change surface though we try not to make sudden moves in her presence the slightest movement is usually enough to scare her approve into her bomb! It's not like she never comes out but she definitely seems more shy than she used to be. Also her buddy Tortuga is molting alter now and she seems lonely. She typically follows him around the tank and now that he is underground she doesn't do as much as she used to. Is there anything I can do to help her to go to her friendly and outgoing self? Joined: Jul 05. 2004Posts: 9183Location: Pennsylvania. U. S. Status: Offline Because of her shyness she is not completely recovered from her cast. She still must feel weak and feels intimidated easily. Please leave her be until she feels 'up to par'. Is it normal to take a long time to recover? She finished molting over a month ago and her exo hardened up nicely and her coloring is so pretty now Before Tortuga went underground she was climbing all over the displace and having a great time! We undergo been trying to act her out more recently since she is all alone right now. Should we get her alone and how will we know when she is ready to interact with us again? "Are You Turning into a Home-Based Hermit?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-21 17:13:46

With no job to drag you out of the house you might find that you no longer have a cerebrate to leave. Sure you might hop into the car and clutch some groceries but that doesn’t involve any deep interaction with people. Neither do conference calls or business lunches. It’s surprising but after a couple of months working at home the joy of freedom can actually wear off and you start to conclude lonely. Of course it doesn’t affect all people. Lots of folks undergo such active families friends or hobbies that it never becomes a problem. Others of us sight it more difficult. If you’re single living in a new town or somewhat of a loner you might not have any activities that It’s easy to turn into a hermit — someone that stays cooped up in the house for days or weeks at a measure with no friends or real connection to the outside world. Not only is hermit life emotionally unhealthy but for most of us it’s far from what we imagine when we decided to act the leap to working at home. We want freedom from the workplace but we don’t want to move into a recluse. The problem is maintaining relationships from home is a displace social skill and no one teaches you how to do it. Because the isolation often comes as a surprise you can also struggle to rearrange your social life into more healthy patterns. The good news is you’re not alone. I’m a hit guy that’s been working from home for 13 years in one capacity or another. Here are some of the things that I do to keep from turning into a hermit: A word of warning though. If you’re living in an apartment complex you might find your neighbors are resistant to getting to know you. Usually they undergo nothing against you; they’re just living there temporarily and they don’t be to get involved. It’s much easier if you live in a neighborhood where people are planning on staying awhile. In fact. I recently bought my own condo for this very reason. For me another big surprise was the way working from domiciliate changed longtime relationships from college and past jobs. Before we used to grab eat or cater up at a business answer and gab about office politics. Explain your situation - If they’re a good friend tell them that you’re struggling to stay “connected” and ask for their back up. One of my friends started inviting me to watch football with him and I love it. The best decision I ever made was to move into a luxury condo development filled with retirees and alter nesters. Most of them are trying to make the same adjustments and they’re thrilled at the opportunity to make a new friend. I’ve gotten to know so many of them lately that I’ve started having to turn off my phone and lock the door just to get some bring home the bacon done. How’s that for a change? The point is if you find yourself becoming isolated don’t alter the mistake of believing there’s nothing you can do about it. You can. It just requires a little more initiative and a new come to your relationships.
